The Democratic Alliance (DA) leadership on Monday said they had received former Midvaal Municipality mayor, Bongani Baloyi’s, resignation from the party.
In his resignation letter, Baloyi said quitting the DA “hasn’t been an easy decision” and he “will forever be grateful to the party for all the support and opportunities afforded me”.
DA Gauteng Provincial Leader Solly Msimanga said Baloyi did not indicate any differences with the party nor did he say what he would be doing after his resignation.
Baloyi, who served two terms as Midvaal Municipality mayor, used social media to announce that he had terminated his membership from the party today.
The DA said Bongani has served the party and the people of Midvaal Municipality excellently over the years. He became the country’s youngest mayor at the age of 26 back in 2013.
Baloyi joins a growing list of black leaders who’ve left the party. They include Lindiwe Mazibuko, Phumzile van Damme, Mmusi Maimane and Herman Mashaba.
Responding to suggestions on Twitter that he had been hounded out of the DA, Baloyi posted: “My journey with the @Our_DA ends today. It has been an amazing 14 years which I will always be proud of and I will remain great full to the DA for their support and opportunities afforded to me.
“I leave out of my OWN agency. Not because I am being purged or any nonsense.”
