Two people died in a late night crash along the N1 north after the Rivonia Road off-ramp, near Sunninghill, Johannesburg.

Emer-G-Med said paramedics responded to the “horrific motor vehicle collision” Just after midnight on Sunday morning.

“On arrival on scene paramedics found the twisted remains of a light delivery vehicle occupying the width of the roadway,” said Emer-G-Med.

“The occupants of the vehicle had been ejected and lay strewn over the roadway. 

“Closer inspection found two people to have sustained fatal injuries and they were declared dead on arrival of paramedics.”

Emer-G-Med said a third person was found in a critical condition and was treated and stabilised on scene “before being airlifted to a specialist facility for the definitive care that he required”.

The cause of the collision was unclear. Police were investigating

Meanwhile, first responders had a busy night Friday and Saturday morning attending to multiple crashes resulting in serious injuries and deaths.

On the first day of the long three-day weekend, Gauteng paramedics responded to reports of a car crash along Solomon Mahlangu Drive in the vicinity of Silver Lakes. 

“A twenty one year old male patient was found ejected, close to his overturned vehicle that was lying in a body of water,” said Emer-G-Med. 

“It is believed that the accident happened the previous evening but the vehicle was only discovered on Friday morning by a pedestrian. 

“The patient sustained serious injuries and was stabilized by our emergency care practitioner prior to being transported to a nearby hospital.”

Late on Friday in Donkerhoek, paramedics responded to a report of a serious car crash in Bronkhorstspruit Road.

“Upon arrival a male patient in his 50’s was found entrapped in his light motor vehicle after colliding with a truck,” said Emer-G-Med. 

“The patient sustained critical injuries and was stabilised by Emer-G-Med paramedics prior to being airlifted by a Netcare911 aeromedical helicopter to a specialist facility.”

In Pretoria paramedics responded to reports of a serious collision on the R21 in the vicinity of Nellmapius bridge.

“On arrival on scene it was found that a light motor vehicle collided with a heavy motor vehicle,” said Emer-G-Med. 

“A female passenger of the light motor vehicle, believed to be in her twenties, sustained critical injuries and was stabilised by Emer-G-Med paramedics prior to being airlifted by an aeromedical helicopter to a specialist facility.” 

Emer-G-Med said the driver of the light motor vehicle sustained minor injuries.

On Saturday, Emer-G-Med paramedics responded to the scene of another crash near Houghton, Johannesburg.

The collision along the M1 south near the Atholl Oaklands offramp occured after a car swerved to avoid a pedestrian and overturned several times.

“The driver, a female aged approximately twenty years old, was found to be in a serious condition and advanced life support intervention was needed to stabilise her before she was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further care,” said Emer-G-Med.
