UPDATED
Initial reports on Friday said 10 people – eight children and two adults -died in a horror crash north of Pongola, KwaZulu-Natal, but the death toll has since been revised to 21 fatalities.
Reports from the scene said a haulage truck and a bakkie collided on Friday afternoon.
KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Mbali Frazer said 19 of the deceased were primary schoolchildren who were being transported to their homes from school.
The truck came to a rest on top of the bakkie.
The driver of the truck is said to have fled the scene soon after the tragedy.
KZN Transport, Community and Safety Liaison MEC Sipho Hlomuka is expected to visit the scene on Saturday.
