Mbombela (Nelspruit) – The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) on Tuesday announced the appointment of Professor Moses Mbewe as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC): Postgraduate Studies, Engagement and Planning.
The UMP also announced the appointment of Dr. Aldo Stroebel as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC): Research, Innovation, and Internationalisation with effect from 01 July 2023.
Professor Mbewe will be responsible for providing strategic leadership for all aspects related to Postgraduate Studies, Engagement, Institutional Planning and Continuing Education Services.
Before he was appointed DVC, Professor Mbewe was the Dean of Agriculture and Natural Sciences at UMP from 2016.
Before joining UMP, Professor Mbewe served as the Head of Department of Water and Sanitation and Acting Director of the School of Computer and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Limpopo.
He was a North-West University Associate Professor and Director of the School of Agricultural Sciences from 2005 to 2011 teaching Microbiology.
Professor Mbewe holds a PhD in Microbial Genetics and Molecular Biology from the University of Cambridge, in the United Kingdom.
Dr. Aldo Stroebel will be responsible for providing strategic leadership on all aspects related to research, innovation, and partnerships.
Dr. Stroebel will also be responsible for Library and Information Services and Institutional Centres and Institutes.
Before joining UMP, Dr. Stroebel was the Executive Director: Strategic Partnerships at the National Research Foundation (NRF) from 2013-2023.
Dr. Stroebel worked at the University of the Free State (2003- 2013) as a Senior Lecturer; Associate Professor in the Centre for Sustainable Agriculture; Founding Director of International Affairs; and Director International Academic and Transformation Projects in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor and Rector.
Dr. Stroebel holds a PhD in Sustainable Agriculture which is a Joint Programme between the University of the Free State and Cornell University, U.S.A.
The appointment of Prof Moses Mbewe and Dr. Aldo Stroebel as Deputy Vice-Chancellors coincides with our 10th anniversary as the University of Mpumalanga,” said Professor Thoko Mayekiso, UMP Vice-Chancellor.
“Over the years, we have grown in stature and academic offerings. We now offer 65 programmes ranging from Higher Certificates to Doctoral Degrees and have more than 8,200 enrolled.
“We firmly believe that they will contribute positively to the academic project of the University and in our pursuit of being An African University leading in creating opportunities for sustainable development through innovation.
