Fans are celebrating the new Africa 100 metre record set by South African sprinter Akani Simbine, who ran the distance in just 9.84 seconds.

Simbine broke the record at the Gyulai Istvan Memorial meet in Hungary on Tuesday. It was also a career best and record for South Africa.

The race was part of the sprinter’s preparation for the Olympics in Japan.

Fans have taken to social media to congratulate Simbine on Social media.

Dipping under 10 seconds in the 100m dash put Simbine in good stead for a medal in Tokyo.

It took 15years, but finally Olusoji Fasuba's 100m African Record is gone! South Africa's Akani Simbine this evening stormed to a new AR of 9.84s (+1.2) to win men's 100m by a canter in Szekesfehervar.
