Johannesburg – A Gauteng couple – 49-year-old Godfrey Maboi and 44-year-old Paulinah Mogale – tied the note in hospital, where the groom was recovering from injuries he suffered in a car crash.
Hailing from Daveyton, the couple’s love story spans an impressive 28 years, and their rather long journey to the altar gained momentum in December 2022 when they got engaged.
With their wedding day scheduled for 10 December 2023, the couple encountered an unexpected hurdle after the car accident left the groom bedridden in hospital.
When the couple shared their wedding plans with the staff and recognising the significance of the occasion, the hospital management allowed the wedding ceremony to take place in the ward, where Godfrey is receiving care.
Accompanied by their pastor, the bride and groom exchanged their vows on Sunday evening, surrounded by the love and support of the Far East Rand Hospital staff and their families who joined virtually through video calls.
This gesture by Far East Rand Hospital not only provided solace and joy to Godfrey and Paulinah but also showcased the dedication of the hospital staff to fostering an environment of compassion and understanding.
The MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko congratulated the newlywed couple and wished them well in their marriage saying that their story was an inspiration to many that irrespective of the obstacles encountered in life there was always a way.
She further commended the management and staff of Far East Rand Hospital for their exceptional support and sensitivity in ensuring that this memorable day was not overshadowed by the groom’s hospitalisation.
“Their commitment to patient-centred care and their willingness to accommodate this significant life event is a testament to the outstanding professionalism and humanity within the healthcare profession,” stated MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko.
“It aligns with the culture of service we are trying to foster across all public health facilities,” stated MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko.
The Gauteng Department of Health said it joined the families, friends, and loved ones of Godfrey and Paulinah in celebrating their union and wishes them a lifetime of happiness, love, and prosperity.
