Johannesburg – The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) has announced that it has signed a five-year wage agreement with Harmony Gold.
“The agreement is applicable from 1 July 2024 and will expire on 30 June 2029,” NUMSA said in a statement issued on Saturday.
NUMSA said it welcomes signing this agreement, which ensures that the lowest paid worker will receive a minimum R1 200 increase in the first year, with an increase of R1 500 in the final year of the agreement.
B Lower employees will receive R1 200 in the first year to R1 500 increase (or 6.2% to 6.5%) or CPI, whichever is greater.
“Inflation is currently at 5.7% and this agreement is above inflation which is something that the union is always striving to achieve with every negotiation that it participates in,” NUMSA said.

Regarding medical aid, NUMSA said the parties agreed that the employer would contribute 65% and employees would contribute 35% for Category 4 to 8 and B Lower Employees.
The agreement will be implemented on 1 July 2024.
The following categories may require implementation before 1 July 2024:
- Funeral Benefit;
- Housing Support: Loss of Life Due to Mine Accident;
- Core Codes;
- Roll Up;
- Shift Systems;
- Equalisation;
- Share Option Scheme (ESOPS) 2
Commenting on the agreement, NUMSA General Secretary Irvin Jim said: “NUMSA wishes to thank its union officials and the regional leadership for their hard work in securing this deal”.
Jim added: “We continue to lead the way as a union that is fighting for improved conditions and benefits for workers and their families”.
