Johannesburg – Two Dutch drug traffickers have been arrested in separate incidents at the OR Tambo International Airport, police revealed on Friday.

Authorities at the airport seized 80 kilograms of fresh Khat (binomial name catha edulis) found in the possession of the accused.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk said a preliminary report said both accused were en route from South Africa to the Netherlands via Dubai.

The 21-year-old and 59-year-old suspects were intercepted by police at OR Tambo when they attempted to check-in and board their flights on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.

“The suspects were consequently arrested and expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court,” said Lieutenant Colonel Van Wyk.

“This brings the total to 13 drug traffickers arrested at the OR Tambo International Airport in the last couple of weeks.”

Khat is a stimulant drug that is native to East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.

Khat contains two cathinone-like compounds that produce effects similar to mild amphetamines.

Chewing Khat produces a mild euphoria and makes the user more alert and talkative.
