Johannesburg – South African authorities have re-opened the Lebombo border post to allow cargo trucks passage to and from Mozambique.
The SA Border Management Authority (BMA) has announced following the partial reopening of the Lebombo port of entry cargo operations have resumed.
“The BMA and SARS [South African Revenue Service] are hard at work to clear the cargo backlog,” a statement issued by border management said.
“The port is now open for cargo movement after the Mozambican authorities managed to address challenges with their systems to facilitate processing through the Ressano Garcia port of entry into Mozambique.
“The initial reopening of the port was to manage the movement of persons but this morning, the Mozambican authorities worked tirelessly to address cargo systems for smooth border processing.”
The Lebombo border post was partially closed on 6 November 2024 owing to violent protests on the Mozambican side following disputed election results won by Frelimo’s candidate Daniel Chapo.
At least 20 people were reportedly killed and many others injured by gunfire as police battled to put down the violent protests in which vehicles were torched.
Opposition candidate Venancio Mondlane, who came in second but claims victory, has called for the protests.
Commenting on the reopening of the border, the Commissioner of the BMA, Dr. Michael Masiapato said: “We are pleased to announce that the Mozambican systems have been restored, with processing activities resuming at the KM 4 checkpoint on the Mozambican side.
“This development paves the way for the full reopening of the port and enables the BMA and SARS teams to work diligently in clearing the current cargo backlog”.
However, the BMA reminded travellers to remain cautious and check travel updates before making any trips to Mozambique.
“The BMA and SARS will continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring smooth and secure port of entry operations for the benefit of all South African citizens and the broader trade community,” the statement said.
