Johannesburg – Six suspected illegal miners have been arrested in Riverlea, Langlaagte, following a shootout with the police.
Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said the suspects were arrested on Friday, (27 December 2024).
“Police recovered unlicensed firearms and ammunition used by the suspects,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Masondo.
Police were tipped off about illegal mining activities in Riverlea.
Members of the police National Intervention Unit acted on the information and went searching for the suspects.
“On arrival at the mentioned spot, police found tools that are used for illegal mining,” said Lieutenant Colonel Masondo.
“While confiscating the tools, the suspects started shooting at the police and the shootout ensued.”
Police arrested two suspects who were found in possession of two firearms, a rifle and pistol, and magazines loaded with ammunition.

Four other suspects were arrested in the vicinity.
Lieutenant Colonel Masondo said the arrested suspects face several charges that include attempted murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
“Further investigation revealed that all the suspects are illegal in the country,” Lieutenant Colonel Masondo said.
The suspects will soon appear in court.
