Weather Alert: SAWS Warns Of Severe Thunderstorms In Joburg

Johannesburg – The South African Weather Services (SAWS) has issued a level 5 warning for “severe thunderstorms” in Johannesburg on Monday, (17 February 2025).

SAWS urged motorists to continue to exercise caution while driving, extend safe following distances, and avoid crossing flooded roads and low-lying bridges.

Residents in low-lying areas were warned to avoid crossing river streams when conducting daily activities.

“City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services has activated Disaster Management Monitoring teams to all seven regions of the City of Johannesburg to monitor overnight especially our most vulnerable communities our Informal settlements,” said spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi.

“Aquatic Rescue Unit remains on high alert overnight and all our Fire Stations are fully operational we are ready to respond to any emergencies which might occur, residents are urged to call our Emergency Services Call Centre on 011 375 5911 for any Life Threatening Emergencies.”
