Germiston – The 10ML Tambo Springs reservoir in Ekurhuleni is nearing completion.
Commenting on the development on Monday, 11 August 2025, the City of Ekurhuleni said its efforts to build an adequate water storage capacity and improve water reticulation “were gaining momentum”.
The City said it has set aside R71 million in the current financial year to finalise minor work on critical reservoirs and towers..
The Northmead Water Tower was also commissioned in June 2025.
“Altogether, R757 million has been set aside to build water supply infrastructure and increase capacity on the city’s wastewater treatment plants,” the City revealed in a statement made available to The Bulrushes.
Tambo Springs 10ML reservoir is part of the City’s comprehensive water infrastructure programme to provide vital storage capacity to support the Tambo Springs Inland Port.
This will be Africa’s largest inland port and a major logistics and warehousing hub, planned to double the current freight logistics capacity heading into and out of Gauteng.
The reservoir’s completion is essential for meeting the water demands of anticipated warehousing and logistics growth in the area, as well as providing reliable water supply to local businesses and community members.
The scope of work for the Tambo Springs Reservoir includes:
- Construction of a robust roof slab and ring beam;
- Installation of steel works and an access ladder;
- Advanced waterproofing for water quality protection;
- Comprehensive stormwater and overflow infrastructure;
- Installation of a palisade perimeter fence for security, and
- Main security gate installation.
“These features are designed to ensure durability, safety, and scalability in line with future development plans around the inland port precinct,” the City said.
“This infrastructure investment supports Ekurhuleni’s broader strategic goals of driving economic activity, creating jobs, and improving living standards.”
