Rustenburg – Police have recovered smuggled counterfeit cigarettes worth more than R200 000, impounded an articulated truck, and arrested the driver.
Sergeant Ofentse Mokgadi, the police spokesperson in Rustenburg, North West, said that the contraband bust and arrest were a result of a swift intelligence-driven operation.
“On Monday, 29 September 2025, police intercepted a 20-wheeled truck at East End, Rustenburg, after information indicated that illicit goods were being smuggled into the area,” said Sergeant Mokgadi.
“Upon searching the truck, officers discovered 42 boxes of Remington Gold cigarettes concealed in the trailer.
“The driver, a 32-year-old Zimbabwean male, was arrested on the spot.
“In addition to the cigarettes, the truck and trailer valued at over R595,000 were also seized.”
The suspect is facing charges relating to the possession of illicit cigarettes and remains in police custody pending his first court appearance.
The Bojanala Platinum Sub-District 2 Commissioner, Brigadier Mamotsamai Ntoagae, has commended the members involved for their swift response, highlighting that such operations form part of ongoing efforts to dismantle illicit trade networks in the district.
“Investigations are continuing, with further intelligence being pursued to trace the origin and distribution routes of the seized consignment,” said Sergeant Mokgadi.
