Durban – Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has witnessed the handover of two of the four brand-new ship-to-shore (STS) cranes for the Durban Container Terminals (DCT) Pier 2.
“Today, I am proud to confirm that this plan and Transnet’s Reinvent for Growth Strategy are yielding clear, measurable results, particularly here in the DCT,” said Minister Creecy.
“One of the most critical steps in our recovery journey has been our strong commitment to capital expenditure.
“Ladies and gentlemen, today, I am delighted to witness the handover of two of the four brand-new STS cranes for DCT Pier 2.”

Minister Creecy revealed that the acquisition of the four STS cranes is an investment of R967 million, which is expected to enhance the terminal’s operational efficiency, cargo-handling capacity, and competitiveness.
The new STS cranes will replace an old fleet which has reached its end–of–lifecycle.
“Furthermore, TPT has set aside R4 billion on acquiring equipment across its business this financial year (2025/26),” Minister Creecy said.
Earlier, the minister spoke of improvements in operational efficiencies at the country’s ports that were in line with Transnet’s Reinvent for Growth Strategy.
“Today, I am proud to confirm that this plan and Transnet’s Reinvent for Growth Strategy are yielding clear, measurable results, particularly here in the Durban Container Terminal,” she said.
“This is affirmed by the recently concluded citrus season, where Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) recorded an impressive 19% year-on-year increase in volumes handled across its terminals, with the Durban Container Terminal (DCT) Pier 2 recording a notable 28.8% increase.
“This is a remarkable improvement.”
The officials, who attended the launch, included Department of Transport Director General Mathabatha Mokonyama, Deputy Director-General (Rail) Mr Mthunzi Madiya, Transnet Board Chair Dr. Andile Sangqu, GCEO of Transnet Michelle Phillips, other Transnet executives, and public Officials.
