Johannesburg – Police have arrested six suspects in connection with the murder of Kaizer Chiefs football star Luke Fleurs, who was shot dead in a hijacking.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said: “The six suspects were traced and arrested in Slovoville, Soweto, in the early hours of Wednesday, (10 April 2024), while the vehicle that was already stripped was recovered on Monday, (8 April 2024)”.
The 24-year-old Premiership soccer player was shot and killed during the hijacking of his car at a fuel station in Honeydew on Wednesday, (3 April 2024), at approximately 20:30.

Lieutenant Colonel Masondo said: “Police believe that the suspects are part of a syndicate that is responsible for car hijacking in Gauteng, and the search for more suspects is continuing”.
On that fateful night, Fleurs, who was driving a red VW Golf 8 GTI, drove into the petrol station at 14th Avenue, corner Hendrik Potgieter.
While waiting to be served by the petrol attendant, he was confronted by two armed males who came driving a white BMW 1 Series.
The suspects pointed a gun at Fleurs and forced him out of his car before shooting him once in the upper body.
One suspect drove off with the victim’s car followed by his accomplice.
Lieutenant Colonel Masondo said the team that arrested the suspects was led by Gauteng Deputy Provincial Commissioner Crime Detection Major General Mbuso Khumalo.
The Tracking Team that worked around the clock to trace and arrest the suspects included:
- SA Police Service (SAPS) Provincial Investigation Unit, SAPS National Crime Intelligence,
- SAPS Drone Unit,
- Honeydew Detectives
- Honeydew Crime Intelligence, CAP Special Operations and
- Fidelity Specialized Services
Lieutenant Colonel Masondo said the arrested suspects were expected to appear Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Friday, (12 April 2024).
