Alex FM has received a windfall of R2 million from the National Lotteries Commission to help it recover from the vandalism it suffered during the week-long unrest.
The 27-year-old community radio station, which was badly affected by looters and arsonists, lost broadcasting equipment worth millions of rand.
“The recent unfortunate occurrences that the country experienced last week have left a deep sense of dismay and disenfranchisement of our community,” lamented Alex FM station manager, Takalane Nemangowe.
Alex FM, broadcasters and the business community in Alexandra township suffered serious losses in the unrest.
“The station lost equipment to the value of R5 million and we are in the process of rebuilding the station to bring it back to its noble glory,” said Nemangowe on Thursday.
“We have been receiving contributions from other fellow broadcasters including LM Radio, where we are currently being housed.”
Primedia, Kaya FM, Jacaranda FM, Skyside SA, Ray’s of Hope, and Groot FM also assisted Alex FM.
Some corporates have declared themselves friends of the station.
Nemangowe said the funding from the National Lotteries Commission was a blessing and would go a long way towards normalising operations at the station.
He said the station management, board, and the entire community of Alexandra were grateful to receive “this great gesture” from the National Lotteries Commission.
“We further extend our appreciation from the members of the media at large for their continued support,” said the station manager.
