Metrorail on Monday said it was investigating an incident in which there was a rollback that resulted in a collision that resulted in the closing of a line outside Soshanguve, Tshwane.
“A train en route to Mabopane station experienced technical fault outside Soshanguve station Monday morning at approximately 05:30 am,” said Lillian Mofokeng, Gauteng Metrorail Spokesperson.
“The technical team upon attending to the fault by uncoupling the set experienced a rollback of the set onto the other causing a collision.
“The train set had eight staff members and no commuters at the time of the incident.”
The incident comes just seven days after the passenger rail services resumed between Mabopane and Pretoria following a two-year hiatus.
Mofokeng said the first Metrorail train from Mabopane to Pretoria on Monday morning was delayed by 30 minutes and all other trains were operating on schedule.
“The estimated cost of the damaged new rolling stock is not yet known and accessors are at the scene to make the determination,” said Mofokeng.
“Investigation of the incident is underway.
“Metrorail train services are not affected and no further delays are expected.”
