Transnet on Monday announced that it was suspending operations of the world-renowned Blue Train owing to safety concerns.
“Due to safety considerations, the business has taken the decision to suspend the Blue Train operations in order to conduct a full analysis following recent unfortunate incidents that have befallen the Blue Train,” said Yolisa Kani, chief business development officer.
“The suspension of the Blue Train is effective from 14 February 2022 until further notice.”
The Blue Train has been bedeviled by disturbing incidents in recent times including derailments and a coach catching alight while under repair.
Last month the two coaches from the Blue Train derailed at the Salvokop train yard.
Just weeks before that in November, the luxurious train derailed at Union Station in Germiston, Gauteng.
Management has apologised to passengers, especially those who had bought tickets in advance, for the inconvenience caused by the suspension of the Blue Train operations.
