Police are searching for two gunmen after a woman and two of her children were shot at in Midrand on Tuesday afternoon.
The shooting occurred at an intersection outside the Turkish Mosque off Pretoria Main Road in Midrand.
Reports indicate that a female driver and two children came under a hail of bullets at about 3 pm while their car was stationary at a red traffic light.
Lieutenant Colonel Masondo said it later transpired that the mother had just picked up her 9-year-old son and13-year-old daughter from school when they were accosted by two men who shot at them.
“The two suspects then jumped into a car that was parked nearby and sped off,” said Lieutenant Colonel Masondo.
The 41-year-old mother and son suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to medical care centre after sustaining gunshot wounds. The daughter escaped unharmed.
Netcare 911 Spokesperson Shawn Herbst said the wounded boy was rushed by members of the public, who had witnessed the shooting, to a clinic situated in the nearby Mosque.
“The son succumbed to injuries while the mother is in a critical condition. The thirteen-year-old girl escaped unharmed,” said Lieutenant Colonel Masondo.
“The motive for the shooting cannot be confirmed at this stage. A case of murder and attempted has been opened for investigation.”
The mother was treated on scene by Netcare 911 emergency care practitioners who managed to stabilise her.
“Due to the serious nature of her injuries the patient was flown by Netcare 911 helicopter ambulance to a specialist medical facility for the care she required,” said Herbst.
Soon after the shooting, the police said they had launched a manhunt for two men and would use all available resources to find the gunmen.
