Johannesburg – South African authorities on Friday said the process of extraditing arrested Israeli fugitive arrested in the leafy suburb of Bryanston.

The 46-year-old fugitive, who was arrested on Thursday along with seven others, is wanted by the Israeli government on charges of murder and attempted murder appeared at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court for extradition proceedings to begin.

Phindi Mjonondwane, National Prosecuting Authority Gauteng Spokesperson said the suspect has been on the Interpol’s Red Notice since 2015 and in 2019, the South African authorities received an extradition application from Israeli authorities. 

The Israeli national was arrested at a Bryanston home together with seven people during a multi-disciplinary operation by Interpol and various units of the South African Police Service.

The suspect made his first appearance at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

The matter was heard in camera and the court ordered that the fugitive cannot be named “for security reasons”.

“The accused will be back in court on Monday 21 November 2022 for the State to join the remaining seven suspects to the criminal case against the Israeli, wherein he faces charges of possession of drug, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as possession of prohibited firearms,” said Mjonondwane.
