Johannesburg – The Democratic Alliance (DA) has re-elected John Steenhuisen to lead the party.

As had widely been expected, Steenhuisen defeated Dr. Mpho Phalatse the former mayor of Johannesburg.

Helen Zille was also re-elected uncontested as DA Chairperson of the Federal Council.

“We are delighted to announce the results of the Leadership Elections which took place at the DA elective Federal Congress 2023,” the party said on Sunday, the second day of its congress.

“Voting for Leadership Candidates took place using the online OpaVote platform and this system worked well.

“The election results were compliant with all DA election requirements and rules.”

The results of the elections are as follows:

Federal Leader: John Steenhuisen

Federal Chairperson: Dr Ivan Meyer

Deputy Federal Chairpersons:

1st Deputy: JP Smith

2nd Deputy: Solly Malatsi

3rd Deputy: Anton Bredell

Chairperson of the Federal Council: Helen Zille, elected uncontested

Deputy Chairpersons of the Federal Council

1st Deputy: Ashor Sarupen

2nd Deputy: Annelie Lotriet

3rd Deputy: Thomas Walters

Chairperson of Federal Finance: Dr Dion George, elected uncontested.

Greg Krumbock Chief Presiding Officer said: “We extend our congratulations to all duly elected candidates.”

Krumbock said the results, “were signed off by us, as presiding officers, as well as the candidates’ party agents and also a professional audit firm who acted as independent external auditors and who oversaw the voting process”.

Krumbock added: “All individuals who observed voting consider the elections free and fair.

“This Congress was not only the largest, but also the most accessible and participatory Congress in the history of the DA.

“We thank all delegates for their participation, their compliance with the rules of our internal democracy, which remains healthy, strong, and vibrant.”

"The realistic prospect of bringing the ANC below 50% in the next year's national elections presents a moment for all of us to radically reshape South Africa and our politics. But it will also be up to us to determine when this will be." – DA leader John Steenhuisen#DAcongress pic.twitter.com/yhBC1PpOKX
