Acornhoek – Two villagers arrested by police after they were found with an unlicensed hunting rifle, seven bullets, and 10 bush knives have been remanded in custody.

The suspects, 67-year-old Willie Manyike and 50-year-old Samuel Machavane appeared in the Mhala Regional Court in Mpumalanga on Monday.

The pair were arrested at Clara Village, near Mhala, over the weekend.

Mpumalanga SA Police Service (SAPS) Spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said a tip-off during Operation Shanyela led to the suspect’s being nabbed.

“The suspects couldn’t produce a license or permit to possess such a firearm,” Mohlala said.

Commenting on the age of the suspects, SAPS provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Manamela said: “We don’t care about one’s age,” adding, “If a person is found to be on the wrong side of the law, we will do what is expected of us.”

Manyike and Machavane are expected back in court on Monday, (21 August 2023), when they are expected to request bail.
