Mkhondo (Piet Retief) – Police arrested a foreign national, who entered South Africa from Eswatini at the Mahamba port of entry, after they discovered dagga stashed inside a tyre of his black VW Golf.
The suspect was arrested during the police Operation Shanela on Monday.
The accused, 41-year-old Majahakangwane Sifundza, appeared in the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Commenting on the arrest, Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli said: “The police became suspicious after sensing a smell of dagga from a spare wheel which was placed in the boot of the car”.
Colonel Mdhluli added: “Six plastic bags containing dagga were discovered weighing about 1.630kg with an estimated street value of about R6 846”.

The accused Sifundza was remanded in custody. He faces charges related to smuggling and dealing in dagga.
Sifundza will return to the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court next week on Wednesday, (8 November 2023).
