Bushbuckridge – Convicted 29-year-old armed robber Shane Ngutshane has been sentenced by the Mhala Regional Court, in Mpumalanga, to 25 years in prison.
The accused was sentenced on Tuesday, (14 November 2023), for a series of robberies.
Ngutshane was found guilty and sentenced as follows:
- 1. Possession of illegal firearms and ammunition in Calcutta in July 2020 – seven years imprisonment.
- 2. House robbery in Hazyview in April 2014 – 15 years imprisonment.
- 3. Possession of stolen motor vehicle in Masoyi in April 2014 – five years imprisonment.
The court said the accused was effectively sentenced to 25 years in prison.
During the trial, the court heard that Ngutshane was part of the so-called “Ellysis” gang that terrorised the community of Mariti and Calcutta.
In 2020, after a consultation between Crime Intelligence and the Hawks, the law enforcers investigated the activities of the “Ellysis gang” and opened several cases.
Other cases against the gang members were still pending in Mhala Regional Court.
