Cape Town – Firefighters were still battling three fires In Cape Town on Wednesday.
The wildfire on the slopes near the seaside town of Simon’s Town, around 40 km (25 miles) south of Cape Town, threatened houses in the pre-dawn hours after it started on Tuesday.
At least five firefighters were injured and two were taken to the hospital, Cape Town Emergency Services spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said.
On Wednesday Table Mountain National Park said it has mobilised extensive firefighting resources in response to the fires within the Cape.
“The Simonstown fire remains an active concern, with over 200 dedicated firefighters from multiple agencies tirelessly battling the blaze,” Table Mountain National Park said.
“Additionally, the Kloofnek crew and tanker have been redirected to address fires in Kloofnek and three spot fires in the Glen area of Table Mountain National Park.
“Firefighting agencies have faced unprecedented challenges today, attending to multiple fires across the Cape Metropole.”
Table Mountain National Park warned firefighting resources were severely stretched.
An advisory to the public said: “Please avoid the Lions Head and the Glen section of Table Mountain National Park, and make use of alternative hiking routes. Your cooperation in this critical time is deeply appreciated”.
