RECOVERED: The 9mm pistol and five bullets recovered by police after a man 'accidentally' shot and injured his teenage son while cleaning the gun

Masoyi – Police in Masoyi, Mpumalanga, on Friday arrested a man for shooting and injuring his 18-year-old son.

The 41-year-old accused, who claims he shot his son by mistake, will spend the weekend behind bars before he appears in the White River Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga on Monday.

The accused allegedly discharged a gun that belonged to his late father – the grandfather of the injured teenager.

Police said the suspect told the police that the 9mm pistol went off by mistake while he was cleaning it at their home in Masoyi.

The incident occurred in December last year.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the victim’s father was arrested on Friday after he failed to produce a firearm licence.

Brigadier Mohlala said police investigations established that the gun, loaded with five bullets, belonged to a deceased person – the suspect’s father.

“The man was arrested after he allegedly discharged a firearm and shot and injured his son whilst he was reportedly cleaning it,” said Brigadier Mohlala.

“He was charged with attempted murder as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm with ammunition.”
