Pretoria – Hanan Jarrar, Ambassador of the State of Palestine to South Africa, on Friday thanked the host country for its “unyielding support and a continued commitment to justice”.
Her comments were in apparent reference to South Africa’s recent move to institute proceedings against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) – the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.
South Africa has filed an urgent application in which it accuses Israel of committing genocide amid the ongoing conflict with the militant group Hamas.
More than 22 000 Palestinians – mostly women and children – have been killed by the Israel Defence Forces in retaliatory actions prompted by the October 7 surprise attacks by Hamas that left about 1 200 Israelis dead.
The ICJ will hear the genocide matter next week.
“As we step into the dawn of a new year, I find it both an honour and a solemn duty to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the people and government of South Africa for their unwavering support during the challenging times that Palestine has faced, particularly with the ongoing genocidal war on Gaza that began on October 7, 2023.
“South Africa’s resolute solidarity with the Palestinian cause is nothing short of remarkable, serving as a beacon of inspiration for the global community.
“The recent actions taken by the South African government exemplify a profound commitment to justice and human rights:
Ambassador Jarrar said the groundbreaking move to file a suit against Israel at the International Court of Justice in The Hague has not only set a powerful precedent but has also intensified international pressure on Tel Aviv to halt its destructive actions in the Gaza Strip.
“I am heartened by the December statement from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, unequivocally asserting the legal consequences for those joining the Israeli Defence Force without the necessary permissions,” said Ambassador Jarrar.
“This bold stance reaffirms South Africa’s commitment to upholding international law and condemning acts that perpetuate violence and suffering.”
She said the decision by South African lawmakers in November last year to close the Israeli embassy and suspend diplomatic ties until a ceasefire was achieved stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment of South Africa to promoting peace and justice in our region.
In October, SA President Cyril Ramaphosa declared his solidarity with Palestinians, while holding a Palestinian flag and donning a kufiya, a symbol of the Palestinian struggle for self-determination.
Ambassador Jarrar said: “The immense solidarity demonstrated by thousands of South Africans across all provinces is truly awe-inspiring”.
She said from annual Free Palestine walks, marches, and community activities to the mass protests countrywide advocating for a ceasefire and active participation in the boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement, the people of South Africa have shown deep empathy and a shared dedication to the cause of justice.
The vibrant murals in South African neighbourhoods, such as Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap and the recently unveiled Wall of Existence in Durban, depicting unwavering support for Palestine, are a powerful visual representation of the profound bond between our nations.
These cultural expressions amplify the voices of those advocating for justice and bring international attention to the plight of Palestinians.
“South Africa’s historical support for Palestine, rooted in parallels with its struggle against apartheid, is a testament to the enduring bond between our nations,” said Ambassador Jarrar.
The solidarity forged during apartheid, with the Palestinian Liberation Organization supporting the African National Congress, echoes through the years and remains a source of strength and inspiration.
As we reflect on these shared histories, Nelson Mandela’s poignant words from 1997 resonate deeply: “We know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of Palestinians.”
Ambassador Jarrar added: “Mandela’s wisdom underscores the interconnectedness of our struggles for justice and equality.
“In closing, I extend my heartfelt appreciation for South Africa’s steadfast support and unwavering solidarity with Palestine. As we step into the new year, may it bring hope and peace.
“I look forward to continuing working with South Africa and renewing our commitment to shared principles of justice and freedom.”
