Klerksdorp – The chief financial officer (CFO) of the Matlosana local municipality in North West, and two others arrested in connection with a R1.4 million vehicle fraud appeared in Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
CFO for the City of Matlosana 38-year-old Mercy Phetla, and GMHM Construction and Projects employees 39-year-old Matshepiso Mothelesane and 49-year-old Nomthandazo Mokasule are facing charges of corruption.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said the case was postponed to March 27 for representation.
NPA spokesperson in the North West division Henry Mamothame, said it was not known to the state what their representations to the Director of Public Prosecutions would entail.
The state alleges that in June 2023, a service provider purchased a Volkswagen Amarok worth R1,4 million for the CFO of the City of Matlosana.
Allegations are that the “gift” was never declared by the CFO to her employer.
Investigations by the Hawks Serious Corruption revealed that the service provider (GMHM) has a month-to-month contract with the municipality.
The trio handed themselves to the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigations known as the Hawks in January.
All the accused were granted bail of R35 000.
The accused were ordered to surrender their passports to the investigating officers.
The court also ordered that all documents relating to GMHM were to be immediately removed from the CFO’s possession.
