Johannesburg – Two South African soldiers have been killed in a mortar attack in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) said Wednesday.
In a terse statement, the SANDF said “a mortar attack on one of our bases in Sake”.
At least 20 other SANDF members were hurt in the mortar attack on Tuesday, (25 June 2024).
“Four members who were critically injured have been hospitalised, while the rest who suffered minor injuries are expected to be discharged soon,” the SANDF said.
“Families of the two members who lost their lives have been informed and all procedures to bring their mortal remains are in process.”
Earlier this February, South Africa deployed 2 900 SANDF members to the eastern DRC, where intense fighting has left many locals displaced.
The deployment was in line with South Africa’s obligation to the regional bloc Southern African Development Community (SADC).
