Rustenburg – Police in North West have announced a reward of R50 000 for information that could lead to the arrest and prosecution of arsonists who set alight 23 buses.

The buses belonging to Bojanala Bus Company valued at R69 million were torched in the early hours of Tuesday, at two separate depots outside Rustenburg.

Six buses were reportedly set on fire at a depot in Chaneng and a further 17 buses torched at a depot in Tlaseng.

North West police commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, urged the community to come forward with information about those behind the arson attack.

Lieutenant General Kwena said such ruthless and destructive actions were hampering the transportation of school children and elderly persons.

North West police spokesperson, Colonel Adele Myburgh, said, the persons behind the arson attack must be brought to book to face the full might of the law.

Anyone with information is requested to contact the Investigating Officer, Captain Johannes Montsho of Phokeng Detectives on Cell 076 834 3531 or the South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Stop on number: 08600 10111.

“Anonymous tip-offs can be communicated via the MySAPS App from your smartphone,” said Colonel Myburgh.

She said the police have opened two cases of malicious damage to property.
