Van Reenen’s Pass – At least 18 people – five of them children – died in a horror multiple-vehicle crash at Van Reenen’s Pass, in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said the tragedy occurred Monday night, (6 January 2025), at about 20:30 along the N3.

“A truck, minibus [taxi], and light motor vehicle involved in a multiple vehicle crash that resulted in 18 fatalities, (13 adults and five children), and one seriously injured baby,” said Simon Zwane, RTMC spokesperson.

“The cause of the crash is unknown and will be subject to the ongoing investigation by the RTMC and South African Police Service.”

KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said: “We wish to send our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. I have requested a comprehensive report from our dedicated Road Traffic Inspectorate team.”

The N3 remained closed overnight at the Van Reenen Pass, near the route marker N3-6X 49S.

Earlier Monday, the SA Weather Service issued a level 8 warning in KwaZulu-Natal about possible flooding, wet roads, and damage to property and infrastructure.

The wet weather has not relented.

“We issued a statement today indicating that since last night, we have noticed an increase in road accidents along the N3, N2 and other routes as a result of heavy rainfall,” said MEC Duma.
