Johannesburg – The Democratic Alliance (DA) has moved to allay fears of Gauteng residents regarding cyanobacteria or blue-green algae in the province’s waterways.
“Gauteng residents need not be alarmed by reports circulating on social media regarding cyanobacteria or blue-green algae in the province’s waterways, specifically the Hennops River, Sesymylspruit, Rietvlei Dam and Hartbeespoort Dam,” said Leanne De Jager MPL and DA Gauteng Spokesperson for Environmental Affairs.
According to a media report, Eutrophic systems are typically home to blue-green algae, known as cyanobacteria, that produce potent toxins.
The report explains that Eutrophication happens when aquatic ecosystems have elevated levels of nutrients, typically from sewage or agricultural fertiliser runoff.
However, DA MPL De Jager rejects the assertion of “potent toxins”.
“Following rigorous engagement with experts on the subject matter, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng can confirm that cyanobacteria is a natural component of river ecosystems and does not inherently pose the risks suggested in recent social media posts,” De Jager said on Wednesday, (22 January 2025).
“The presence of cyanobacteria in our waterways is a natural occurrence and part of healthy aquatic ecosystems.
“These photosynthetic bacteria play crucial roles in oxygen production, nitrogen fixation and the creation of beneficial relationships with aquatic plants.
“While we understand public concern about water quality, the recent characterisation of cyanobacteria as a severe threat has been unnecessarily alarmist.”
De Jager said the DA will continue to monitor water quality throughout Gauteng’s water systems. She said ensuring public safety remains “our top” priority.
“We encourage residents to rely on official communications regarding water quality rather than unverified social media reports,” said the DA Gauteng spokesperson for environmental affairs.
“The DA remains committed to transparency and will continue to monitor and report on water quality issues affecting our communities.”
