The advancing rebels claimed, early Monday morning, that they captured eastern Congo’s largest city.
In a statement released minutes before the expiration of the 48-hour deadline imposed by the M23 for the Congolese army to surrender its weapons, the rebels announced the capture of Goma.
Congolese military leaders have reportedly fled the city via Lake Kivu.
