Johannesburg – Two policemen and four other suspects have been arrested in connection with blue light robberies targeting unsuspecting motorists using the highways.
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said a team of dedicated law enforcers acted on a tip-off about two rogue police officers allegedly involved in blue light robberies.
Colonel Nevhuhulwi said on Thursday, (20 March 2025, the team summoned the two police officers and interviewed them at a police station.
Information garnered from the interview led the police to two more civilian suspects, who were found in possession of three firearms and signal-jamming devices.
“All four suspects including the police officers were arrested and were further linked to two Kempton Park cases of truck hijacking and carjacking,” said Colonel Nevhuhulwi.
Commenting on the arrests, Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni said: “It is disheartening to see those who are expected to enforce and uphold the law being the ones who work together with the criminals to terrorise our communities.
“This arrest should send a strong message to those few rotten potatoes within the Service that the arm of the law is too long and we will surely catch up with them.”
The team of law enforcers that made the arrests included police officers from Gauteng Crime Intelligence, the Provincial Investigative Unit, Highway Patrol, and Road Traffic Management Corporation.
Lieutenant General Mthombeni “welcomed the arrests” and commended the team for their commitment to ensuring that those who break the law were brought to book.
Police investigations continue.
