Mbombela (Nelspruit) – Former Deputy President David Mabuza has passed away after a short illness at 64.
Confirming reports of Mabuza’s passing on Thursday, 3 July 2025, the African National Congress (ANC) expressed sadness and conveyed condolences.
Fondly known as “DD or the Cat” not only to the people of his home province of Mpumalanga, but countrywide, the former deputy president passed away in a hospital in Johannesburg on Thursday (3 July 2025).
In a statement, ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula described Mabuza as a “disciplined and dedicated cadre who carried his task with dignity and loyalty.”
Mbalula added: “It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we learn of the passing of former Deputy President of the Republic and stalwart of our movement, Comrade David Dabede Mabuza.
“Comrade Mabuza dedicated his life to the service of the people of South Africa. From his days in the struggle against apartheid to his leadership as Premier of Mpumalanga and later as Deputy President.
“He was a committed cadre who carried the values of unity, discipline, and transformation.”
Mbalula said the ANC has lost the gallant cadre.
“On behalf of the African National Congress, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, comrades, and the people of South Africa,” Mbalula said.
“We have lost a patriot, a freedom fighter, and a leader who served with humility and conviction.
“May his soul rest in peace, and may we honour his legacy by continuing the work of building a united, non-racial, non-sexist, democratic, and prosperous South Africa.”
Before being elected deputy president, Mabuza was Mpumalanga premier and ANC chairperson in that province.
He also served as the Mpumalanga Member of the Executive Council in various portfolios, including agriculture and education.
Earlier in his life, Mabuza was a teacher and school principal.
