eMkhondo (formerly Piet Retief) – Authorities have called on motorists to exercise caution on wet roads after five people died, and several others were injured when their bus overturned along the R33 Road between eMkhondo and Amsterdam, Mpumalanga.

The deadly crash occurred on Monday, 1 December 2025, when the bus was travelling from Johannesburg along the R33 Road.

A preliminary probe suggested that wet road conditions may have led to the crash.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, has conveyed sympathies to the bereaved families and wished the survivors speedy recoveries.

“The crash is still under investigation. It is, however, suspected that prevailing wet conditions may have played a hand in the crash,” MEC Macie said.

The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison on Tuesday, 2 December 2025, warned motorists to exercise caution on the roads following the deadly bus crash.

Road users in Mpumalanga were advised to remain vigilant, considering the inclement weather conditions, and adhere to road regulations.

“We are appealing to drivers to adjust their driving in line with the prevailing conditions on the road, and this includes the wet weather,” MEC Macie.

“Every driver must prioritise their own safety and that of other road users. Let us save lives by being highly alert and obeying the rules.

“Long-distance drivers must rest sufficiently along the way.”
