Robert Sobukwe Town (Graaff-Reinet) – The gravesite of Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) founding president, Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe, has been vandalised.
Commenting on the deplorable act on Wednesday, 18 March 2026, the PAC said it “condemns in the strongest possible terms the shameful and cowardly act of vandalism committed against the gravesite of the founding President of the PAC, Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe”.
The gravesite was vandalised just weeks after the name change of Graaff-Reinet to Robert Sobukwe Town in the Eastern Cape was gazetted on 6 February 2026.
The matter has divided the Karoo town and has seen protests from opposing groups.
Commenting further on the gravesite vandalism, the PAC said: “This disgraceful act comes in the wake of a historic mass march led by the PAC, alongside community members, which reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the African people to defend and preserve the legacy, name, and ideals of Sobukwe”.
The PAC said it was deeply concerning that such an incident occurred at a time when the voice and vision of Sobukwe were being reignited across the country.
The PAC said it “views this act not merely as vandalism, but as a deliberate and calculated attempt to tarnish the name, legacy, and enduring contribution of Sobukwe”.
The party said it has laid a criminal complaint with the police.
“A criminal case has been formally opened with the relevant law enforcement authorities, and we call for a swift, thorough, and transparent investigation to ensure that those responsible are identified and brought to justice,” the PAC said.
“These acts of desperation, driven by insurgent forces seeking to sow division and confusion, will not succeed.
“The legacy of Sobukwe is rooted in the hearts and consciousness of the masses and cannot be erased by acts of criminality and provocation.”
The PAC said the desecration of a national heritage site and a symbol of African resistance must be treated with the seriousness it deserves.
The party further calls on all its members, supporters, and the broader community to remain vigilant, united, and disciplined in defending the legacy of Sobukwe.
“We must not allow provocations to divide or distract us from the historic mission of total liberation and the restoration of African dignity,” the party said.
“The PAC remains resolute: the name of Sobukwe will not be silenced, his legacy will not be defaced, and his vision will continue to guide the struggle for land, freedom, and self-determination.”
