Rabat – The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) (https://FRMF.ma) has commented for the first time about the decision of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeal to award them the AFCON Cup after stripping Senegal of the title.

In a shocking move, the CAF Appeals Board announced on Tuesday, 17 March 2026 – about two months after the AFCON Final – that it had stripped the winners Senegal of the title and awarded a 3-0 victory to the hosts, Morocco.

The ensuing backlash on social media from disgruntled fans prompted a response from Morocco explaining that the appeal was merely aimed at enforcing the rules and not reversing the outcome of the tournament.

In a statement made available to The Bulrushes, the FRMF (https://FRMF.ma) said it “wishes to reiterate that its appeal was ever aimed at contesting the sporting merit or performance of the teams involved in this tournament, but solely to ensure the proper enforcement of competition regulations”.

The statement added: “The federation reaffirms its commitment to respecting the regulations, ensuring the clarity of the competitive framework, and maintaining the stability of African football competitions.

“The Federation also wishes to commend all the nations that participated in this year’s edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which served as a significant moment for African football.

“The FRMF will issue a more comprehensive official statement in the coming days after a scheduled meeting of its governing bodies.”

However, Senegal has stated that it will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, saying the CAF appeal board ruling was “an unfair, unprecedented and unacceptable decision which brings discredit to African football”.

Meanwhile, punters are casting a beady eye on the matter to see what happens to the lost bets they made on the final.

Betting companies are yet to make any public statement on the matter.
