Rhodes University has conferred degrees, diplomas, and certificates on 2 190 students during its Autumn 2026 graduation ceremonies in Makhanda, marking one of the institution’s largest cohorts in recent years.
The ceremonies, presided over by Chancellor Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, honoured both undergraduate and postgraduate achievements.
Of the total graduates, 1 340 received bachelor’s degrees, while 850 earned postgraduate qualifications, including 53 master’s and 14 doctoral degrees.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Sizwe Mabizela paid tribute to students who were the first in their families to obtain university degrees, describing their success as “a moment of profound pride and inspiration.”
He also highlighted the achievements of 124 local students who entered Rhodes through the GADRA Matric School initiative, with 52 completing postgraduate studies.
The university conferred honorary doctorates on sculptor Maureen Quin, actress Leleti Khumalo, and advocate Wim Trengove SC, recognising their distinguished contributions to South African society.
Student leadership was also celebrated, with 16 current and former members of the Student Representative Council graduating, half of them with postgraduate qualifications.
Mabizela commended their ability to balance leadership responsibilities with academic success.
The Vice-Chancellor acknowledged the memory of students who died before completing their studies, noting that their names remain recorded in the university’s official history.
Women made up 69% of the graduating class, while international students accounted for 5%.
Mabizela urged graduates to embrace lives of service, integrity, and leadership, telling them: “Step forward with confidence, knowing that you possess the power to shape a brighter and more just future.”
The university will host an additional ceremony in October dedicated to master’s and doctoral graduates, underscoring its commitment to advanced scholarship.
