LANDMARK: Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Minister Willie Aucamp presided over the signing of the Beneficiation Scheme Framework Agreement

Skukuza Rest Camp, Kruger National Park – On the eve of the Kruger National Park’s centenary, South Africa’s Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Minister Willie Aucamp, presided over a landmark moment: the signing of the Beneficiation Scheme Framework Agreement.

This agreement, signed on Friday, 29 May 2026, the minister declared, represents not only redress for previously dispossessed landowners but also a new model of inclusive conservation.

A Story of Resilience

Minister Aucamp acknowledged the painful history of land dispossession tied to the park, describing land as “bloodlines, legacy, and heritage.”

He reminded attendees that the land claims were lodged in the early 2000s, and by 2008, the Cabinet had recognised Kruger as a strategic national asset requiring equitable redress.

Negotiations began in 2012, culminating in this week’s signing.

While delays and disagreements marked the journey, Aucamp emphasised that these were not failures but the realities of transforming systems “never designed to be inclusive.”

He paid tribute to community members who passed away before seeing this day, saluting their resilience and pursuit of justice.

A Foundation for the Future

The minister stressed that the agreement is not an endpoint but a foundation for structured implementation, economic opportunities, and long-term partnerships.

“The success of this scheme will not be measured by today’s signatures – but by the impact it delivers in the lives of communities now and in the long term,” he said.

Minister Aucamp urged SANParks and its board to ensure delivery, noting that credibility depends on execution and partnership with claimant communities.

For the landowners present, Minister Aucamp described the moment as both a victory and a platform for future generations.

Inclusive Conservation

The agreement aligns with South Africa’s broader conservation goals, including Goal 4 of the White Paper on Conservation and Sustainable Use, which emphasises transformation, rights, and responsibilities in the biodiversity sector.

Minister Aucamp underscored that conservation must deliver value not only for biodiversity but also for people, affirming a model where communities are partners, not spectators.

As Kruger National Park celebrates 100 years, the minister challenged the nation to envision a future of conservation that is legitimate because it is inclusive, supported by those who live closest to the land.

“It cannot look like the past,” he said.

“It must be a future where conservation succeeds because it is supported by the people.”

Honouring Legacy, Building Opportunity

The signing ceremony was attended by provincial leaders, SANParks executives, traditional leaders, and members of the claimant communities.

For many, it marked the culmination of decades of struggle and the beginning of a new chapter where heritage and opportunity converge.

The minister closed with a call to unity: “We must work together to advance South Africa’s conservation aspiration where people and nature thrive.

“Where we safeguard our valued natural resources as we advance socio-economic development.”

Here is to 100 years of conservation excellence.
