Polokwane – A 26-year-old woman employed as a cashier at a milling company has been arrested for stealing half a million rand by issuing used receipts to unsuspecting customers while pocketing their payments without ringing the till.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the anomaly was uncovered when an alert customer raised the alarm.

“On 11 August 2025, the owner of the milling company received a phone call from a customer who queried discrepancies on a receipt,” Brigadier Mashaba said on Tuesday, 21 July 2026.

“The date and time on the receipt did not correspond with the purchases.

“Upon checking, the owner discovered that a cashier had allegedly been issuing duplicate receipts to customers.

“A review of CCTV footage allegedly confirmed that one of the female cashiers was responsible for using the duplicated receipts.”

An internal audit was subsequently conducted and revealed that stock to the value of R500 000 could not be accounted for.

The owner also collected the duplicated invoices as evidence of the alleged fraudulent activities.

The matter was reported to the Provincial Commercial Crimes Unit, which opened a case of fraud and conducted intensive investigations.

Earlier today, the 26-year-old female suspect was arrested in Mokopane, Limpopo, and brought before the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court.

In court, the suspect was named as Sune Grobbelaar.

She was remanded in custody, and her case was adjourned to Monday, 27 July 2026, for further police investigations and a bail application.

Police investigations are continuing.
