Cape Town – Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach has been appointed as the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) new Chief Whip in the National Assembly.

Announcing the appointments on Monday, 18 May 2026, MP George Michalakis, the DA Parliamentary Leader, stated: “I am pleased to announce the appointment of Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach as the Democratic Alliance’s new Chief Whip in the National Assembly”.

Michalakis added: “Breytenbach brings 12 years of experience in Parliament and decades before that as senior state prosecutor, to this position.

“She will be the custodian of Parliament’s rules and procedures on the part of the DA.

“She will also, alongside myself, be the party’s chief negotiator within the GNU in Parliament.”

Breytenbach has served for her entire tenure in Parliament as the DA’s spokesperson on justice.

“During 10 of those years, I was her DA counterpart in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP,” said the DA Parliamentary Leader.

“Through this, the DA is sending a clear message that safety and security are a top priority for us in Parliament, in line with the Federal Leader, Geordin Hill-Lewis’ vision.”

The DA said Breytenbach will also, alongside Deputy Chief Whip Bax Nodada, be responsible for 13 NA whips, 87 NA members, and 12 NCOP members.

“I have no doubt that they will make a formidable team,” stated Michalakis.

“I am joined by the entire caucus in wishing Breytenbach success in this new position.”
