Johannesburg – Malawi President Arthur Peter Mutharika has travelled to South Africa on a private visit.
The visit on Friday, 12 June 2026, comes at a time when hundreds of Malawians have sought refuge at Sherwood Hall in Durban amid rising anti-immigrant sentiment in South Africa.
The Malawians have opted for voluntary repatriation and were waiting for buses to pick them up.
However, there was no indication that the Malawi President would meet the Malawians.
A statement signed by Chief Secretary to the Malawi government, Dr. Justin Adack K. Saidi, only said the President was scheduled to depart from Kamuzu International Airport on Friday afternoon.
“His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika , President of the Republic of Malawi, will today, 12 June 2026, travel to the Republic of South Africa on a private visit.”
According to local reports, this will be the third time 85-year-old President Mutharika has travelled to South Africa on a private visit since assuming office.
