Mbombela (Nelspruit) – Police in Mpumalanga have launched a manhunt for a 15-man armed gang that deliberately crashed into a cash-in-transit armoured vehicle before stealing an undisclosed amount of money.
Narrating events leading to the daring robbery on Monday, South African Police Service (SAPS) Mpumalanga Spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said a white Mercedes Benz deliberately crashed head-on into the armoured vehicle.
The armed robbers opened fire on the armoured vehicle injuring two Fidelity guards in the attack.
“Two security guards sustained serious injuries after their vehicle overturned and they are currently receiving medical treatment in hospital,” Brigadier Mohlala said.
The robbers disarmed the wounded guards, bombed the armoured vehicle, and stole an undisclosed amount of cash before they fled in two other gateway cars.
The cash-in-transit heist occurred along Legogota Road in KaNyamazane, near Mbombela.

Brigadier Mohlala said the suspects torched the white Mercedes Benz before they fled in two white Ford Ranger bakkies.
SAPS is appealing to anyone with information regarding the suspects to cooperate with them.
“No one has been arrested so far,” Mohlala said.
“As police, we call on anyone with information that may assist in apprehending the perpetrators to call the Crime Stop line 08600 10111.
“All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous.”
