Johannesburg – Holiday jollification involving imbibing copious amounts of alcohol has kept the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) busy with the arrest of at least 166 drunk drivers in just one week.
In a statement made available to The Bulrushes, the JMPD said it was concerned about the high number of arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The JMPD said during intensified traffic control operations across the city between 21 April 2025, and 27 April 2025, traffic officers arrested 166 motorists for drunk driving.
“These arrests underscore the JMPD’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all road users in the city,” said the statement released late Tuesday, (29 April 2025).
The JMPD said the operations, which involved increased visibility and strategic roadblocks across various areas of Johannesburg, aimed to deter drunk driving and hold offenders accountable.
“The blatant disregard for the law and the safety of others displayed by these individuals is deeply concerning,” said JMPD Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca.
“Our officers will continue to be vigilant and proactive in enforcing traffic laws, particularly those pertaining to driving under the influence.
“We want to send a clear message that drunk driving will not be tolerated in Johannesburg, and those who choose to endanger lives will face the full consequences of the law.”
The JMPD warned motorists against driving under the influence of alcohol, which it considers “a serious offence” that can lead to severe injuries, fatalities, and legal repercussions.
The JMPD urged all motorists to refrain from drinking and driving and to make responsible choices to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road.
“Alternative transportation options, such as e-hailing services or designated drivers, should always be considered,” the JMPD said.
“The arrested individuals are expected to appear in court soon to face charges related to driving under the influence of alcohol.”
The JMPD said it will continue its efforts to combat drunk driving through ongoing enforcement and public awareness campaigns.
