SHARE

Carolina – Innocent Sthembiso Maseko, who is accused of pouring a flammable liquid on his wife before setting her alight, has been remanded in custody.

The accused’s 22-year-old wife, whose name has been withheld, suffered serious burn wounds in the vicious attack on Tuesday and remains in hospital fighting for her life.

Police arrested 34-year-old Maseko also known as “Spoto” who appeared in the Carolina Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga on Thursday.

He was denied bail.

Narrating details of the gender-based violence crime, Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli said at about 3 am neighbours responded to the woman’s screams.

He said when they went out to investigate, they saw the woman engulfed in flames.

Maseko had allegedly poured a flammable liquid from a two-litre container on her.

When the accused saw the neighbours coming to his house he fled.

Colonel Mdhluli said: “The woman is currently fighting for her life in the hospital”.

Maseko, who is facing a charge of attempted murder, will be back in court on Monday.
